Oral history interview with David P. Holveck 1999 February 2, 2006 July 14, & October 20

David Holveck begins the interview with a discussion of his early years in Trenton and eastern Pennsylvania. Holveck graduated from Malvern Preparatory School, then entered West Chester University in 1964, receiving his bachelor's degree in health and physical education in 1968. After serving in the U.S. Navy, Holveck joined Abbott Laboratories, working in the Radiopharmaceutical Division. Holveck left Abbott Laboratories in 1974 and joined Corning Medical, where he worked for five years as a sales supervisor. He moved from sales into marketing and business, then left the company to join General Electric Medical. Learning more about medical diagnostics, Holveck decided to join the newly-formed healthcare company, Centocor, in 1983. Centocor's main concern at the time was a hepatitis-testing product. Shortly after Holveck's arrival, the company expanded its testing line to include breast cancer, lung cancer, and gastro-intestinal cancer. From 1983 to 1992, Holveck built and ran the diagnostics business at Centocor. Holveck credits Centocor's location as a reason for the company's success. In 1986, Centocor ventured into biopharmaceuticals with a sepsis therapeutic called Centoxin. Failure to gain FDA approval for Centoxin caused Centocor to discontinue research on the product in 1992. Holveck concludes the interview with thoughts on biotechnology's development on the East Coast.
